This issue assesses the presentations and themes addressed during the fifth Eurosafe Forum held in Paris in November 2003. The overall theme adopted for this Eurosafe Forum dealt with stakeholder participation in nuclear issues in the context of the enlargement of the European Union. The main issues addressed were: The energy landscape in Europe after enlargement; Greater democracy in decision-making on nuclear issues; Safety assessment of nuclear facilities: adapting safety requirements and assessment methods to new challenges; Research into the safety of nuclear facilities: intensifying European cooperation; Waste management: opening the way for underground laboratories; Environmental protection and radiological protection: innovative assessment approaches and assistance drawing up policies; Safety of nuclear materials: moving towards a joint European effort on physical protection; Bringing the GRS-IRSN teams closer together from the perspective of a European pool of technical safety organisations.
