Training: Pieter De Gelder obtained the degree of “Physical Engineering” (main field of study: Nuclear Engineering) from the University of Ghent (Belgium) in 1976. He obtained a Doctoral Degree in Applied Sciences in 1982.
Professional career (most relevant stages): He joined AVN in 1983 and was involved in the analysis of the nuclear power plant safety systems and the protection against external hazards. From the mid-eighties on he started the PSA activities at AVN. In 1990 he became Head of the Mid-Term Projects (MTP) Section and in 2000 Division Head for Studies, Research and Development.
When in April 2008 the regulatory activities of AVN were transferred to Bel V, a new subsidiary of the Belgian safety authority FANC (Federal Agency for Nuclear Control), Pieter De Gelder was appointed Department Head for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Assessment.
