Eurosafe NEWS

Dear Reader,

The June 2017 edition of the EUROSAFE FORUM Newsletter was prepared by the Slovak company VUJE, a.s., located in Trnava.

VUJE is an engineering company providing services in energy sector, with a special focus on nuclear power plants. Its current activities include design, preparation, construction, operation and decommissioning of energy installations, safety analysis, technical support, research and training in the field of nuclear and conventional power generation.

VUJE, a key player in the nuclear sector since 1977, offers plenty of services and works based on considerable experience of project implementation in the nuclear field in Slovakia as well as abroad.

We are pleased to share with you information on some of our remarkable activities and wish you pleasant and interesting reading.

STU - Helium Loop

A part of the research of the Gas Cooled Fast Reactors generation IV is experimental support for evaluation of natural circulation in decay heat removal system (DHR).

The purpose of this experimental helium loop is investigation and testing of the decay heat removal system of the gas-cooled fast reactors and demonstrator ALLEGRO.

Program of Thermal Ageing Monitoring

The long-term operation of nuclear power plants can cause changes in the properties of structural materials of the components important to safety. Besides the radiation embrittlement and the fatigue loads, it is possible to consider the thermal ageing as one of the dominant ageing mechanisms. Thermal ageing is temperature, material state (microstructure) and time dependent degradation mechanism due to long-term exposure at the operating temperature of 570 K.

Direct Sampling from NPP Components

A quick method to determine the current state of materials is a direct sampling of the primary circuit components and evaluation of the removed samples. Removing materials from operated devices using classical techniques represents an inappropriate interference with the integrity of assessed part. These “classical” destructive methods require subsequent repair of removed parts, including welding, heat treatment and a range of non-destructive testing.

Small Punch Test Application in VUJE laboratories

Small Punch Test (SPT) samples have a great advantage in reducing the radioactivity of the irradiated materials due to their small volume and also for the determination of material properties, which are highly dependent on the local microstructure e.g. heat affected zone. The small sample volume give us the possibility of the basic mechanical properties estimation even when there is a lack of original testing material.

Seismic Workplace for Testing Seismic and Vibration Resistance of Equipment

Company VUJE, a.s. within Operational Program Research and Development for the project “Increasing the safety of nuclear equipment during a seismic event“ (ITMS: 26220220171) with support of the Agency of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic for the Structural Funds of EU (Agency), now The Research Agency (RA), built in cooperation with STU in Bratislava common seismic workplace with three one-axis seismic shakers and with modern three-axis seismic shaker, which allows simulating real earthquake loads in all three axis concurrently.

Innovations at Full Scope Simulator Bohunice V2 NPP

There is always need to extend simulation possibilities and to include more operational staff into the common training with control room operators.

Protect People from the Effects of Electromagnetic Fields in Work and the Environment

Since the middle of the last century, there has been a massive boom in technical sources of electromagnetic field (EMF). Recently, this is particularly the development of wireless technologies (such as mobile phones, WiFi, etc.).
