SSTC NRS Joined European Clearinghouse Technical Council

The State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety (SSTC NRS) was included into the Technical Council of the European Clearinghouse, the network for analysis of NPP operating experience supported by the European Commission (EC). The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine (SNRIU) was included into the European Clearinghouse Oversight Committee.

These decisions were announced during the regular annual meeting of the Technical Council of the European Clearinghouse held in Petten (the Netherlands) on 14 March this year. Oleksandr Pecherytsia, SSTC NRS First Deputy Director, took part in the meeting for SSTC NRS. Roman Khalenko, Head of SNRIU Operational Safety Department, represented the Ukrainian nuclear regulator.

Maria Betty, Head of the Nuclear Safety and Security Directorate of the EC Joint Research Center, congratulated the Ukrainian delegation on joining the European Clearinghouse and added that Ukraine's participation, given its powerful reactor fleet of 15 operating power units, the developed regulatory body and its technical support organization, will undoubtedly benefit and strengthen the network's capabilities as a whole. “The activity of the European Clearinghouse is very important in current situation. After all, it is aimed at efficient operating experience feedback, exchange of lessons learned from the analysis of operational events and their consideration for NPP safety improvement”, Maria Betty added.

In his speech, Oleksandr Pecherytsia talked about general areas of SSTC NRS activity, available resources and scientific and technical potential of the enterprise. In addition, SSTC NRS First Deputy Director presented in detail to the European colleagues the main components of the analysis of NPP operational experience performed by enterprise experts since 1992 in support of SNRIU oversight activity.

At the end of the meeting, the members of the European Clearinghouse discussed the areas of the topic research of NPP operating experience planned for this year. SSTC NRS that maintains the databases of operational events at Ukrainian NPPs for 25 years will undoubtedly join this research.

Note: the European Clearinghouse network was established in 2008. To date, 19 regulatory bodies are the members of the Oversight Committee, 22 regulators and/or technical support organizations of the European countries were involved into the Technical Council. The European Clearinghouse also includes representatives from the IAEA, the Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD-NEA) and the Joint Research Center of the European Commission.
