SNRIU Chairman Handed License for Operation of Radioactive Waste Disposal Facilities

On 13 February, representatives of the SNRIU headed by Hryhorii Plachkov, SNRIU Chairman, participated in the meeting of the Board of the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management (SAEZ) held on Chornobyl NPP site. The meeting purpose was to sum up activities of exclusion zone enterprises in 2017. 

Members of SAEZ Board, representatives of central and local authorities, Secretariat of the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Environmental Policy, Natural Resources and Mitigation of Chornobyl Accident Consequences, Chornobyl Shelter Fund and EBRD Nuclear Safety Account in Ukraine, directors of enterprises participated in the meeting.

During the meeting, Hryhorii Plachkov solemnly handed extended License № ЕО000953 for activities on the operation of radioactive waste disposal facilities to Andrii Burhomistrenko, Acting Director of Centralized Radioactive Waste Management Enterprise (CRME). Within this license, the operating organization will operate facilities of Radioactive Waste Disposal Site (RWDS) Buriakivka according to scheduled tasks to ensure stable configuration of closed facilities No. 1-30 of this RWDS.

Besides, this license provides for activities on safety improvement, remediation and scheduled tasks for facilities located in the exclusion zone, where large amounts of emergency radioactive waste were placed during the elimination of ChNPP accident in 1986-1988, namely RWDS Pidlisnyi, RWDS ChNPP Stage III, Radioactive Waste Interim Confinement Site (RICS).

The license was extended until completion of lifecycle stage of RWDS Buriakivka radioactive waste disposal facilities.

Summing up the discussion, Vitalii Petruk, SAEZ Head, stated: “The main task of SAEZ activities in the exclusion zone is to ensure safety. Radiation monitoring, radioactive waste management, ChNPP decommissioning, commissioning of NSC and SFSF-2, keeping of the territories in safe sanitary and fire state reduce risks of radionuclide spreading to adjacent territories”.
