Jubilee 15th Conference of Young Scientists on Energy Issues (CYSENI) at Lithuanian Energy Institute

The first steps of the conference of young scientists of Lithuanian Energy Institute (LEI) were initiated long time ago – back in 2002. It was based on the idea of having a unique platform for the young scientists of the Institute to present and share the results of their research, to become acquainted with the work done by their colleagues, to discuss relevant energy-related issues and to initiate and promote further scientific cooperation among them. Finally, the first Conference was organized in 2004. Since 2007, the scope and number of the conference participants have been rapidly increasing and nowadays its abbreviation and title as CYSENI – Conference of Young Scientists on ENergy Issues, is already known among the young scientists and researchers within Europe and even beyond. Considering interest and high appraisal among young scientists, the organizers are encouraged to make this conference the foremost annual event for young scientists performing research in the energy field in the Baltic Sea region. Relevant researches carried out by the young scientists, high qualification scientific papers and presentations stand out as the most highlighted features of the CYSENI by its participants.

Already for the 15th time the CYSENI was held on 23–25 May 2018 at Lithuanian Energy Institute. This year, three-day anniversary event has attracted an interest of a large number of guests, more than 150 people including participants, reviewers, keynote speakers, governmental representatives, chairman’s of the scientific sections and other interested guests have attended this conference. During the conference event, in total 60 research papers were presented by the participants from 13 different countries. 32 papers were presented by the participants from Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Ukraine, Poland, Belarus, Turkey and Taiwan, the remaining papers were presented by young scientists from Lithuania.

This year, the CYSENI participants mostly focused on the topics related to renewable energy sources, nuclear energy, material sciences and technologies, combustion and plasma processes, energy economics and policy, etc. All participants and guests were invited into four keynote presentations during two plenary sessions. The first keynote speaker – Prof. Dr. Tony Donné (Programma Manager (CEO) of EUROfusion, Germany) introduced the audience to topic of The European Roadmap Towards Fusion Electricity. Another presentation was made by the Assoc. Prof. of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (Italy) Dr. Francesco Comiti (the title of presentation: Hydropower Impacts on River Systems: The Hydromorphological Approach). During the plenary session of the second day, Dr. Justus Oldenburg (Secretary of the Technical Director of GRS, Germany) made a presentation by the title of New Reactors: International Developments and Safety Features. The fourth keynote speaker – Dr. Michael LaBelle (Assoc. Prof. at Central European University, Hungary) shared his experience on topic of Trade-offs Between Energy Innovation and Price: State Responsibilities and Energy Justice.

The CYSENI conference addressed topics of interest in the context of nuclear energy research and development. Besides 2 presentations on nuclear given in the keynote section on developments and future of Fusion and Fission nuclear reactors, two sections of the CYSENI conference were devoted to the nuclear energy. Nuclear related research of young scientists was addressed in the section „Nuclear fission and radiation protection”. The seminar of H2020 project BRILLIANT (Baltic Region Initiative for Long Lasting InnovAtive Nuclear Technologies) for wider public was arranged as another separate section of CYSENI.

Positive impressions of our participants is the main thing motivating us to move forward together with up-to-date challenges related to energy issues. Therefore, the Lithuanian Energy Institute will be glad to see you at the next year Conference of Young Scientists on Energy Issues (CYSENI 2019), which will be held on 23–24 May 2018 in Kaunas, Lithuania. All young and enthusiastic scientists are welcome to become participants of CYSENI 2019 and to share their scientific ideas with other young researchers, just do not miss the 21st of  December 2018 – the deadline for registration and abstract submission.
