Baltic region cooperation in nuclear energy related research

Final meeting of H2020 BRILLIANT project was held in the Lithuanian Energy Institute. The importance of regional cooperation in energy field, which is especially crucial for small countries of Baltic sea region, was recognised. All participants agreed that BRILLIANT project provided a good opportunity for initiation of Baltic Sea countries cooperation in nuclear energy field.

More than 30 participants of different national and international agencies and organisations participated at the final H2020 BRILLIANT (Baltic Region Initiative for Long Lasting InnovAtive Nuclear Technologies) project meeting, which was held in the premises of project coordinator, the Lithuanian Energy Institute, in Kaunas, Lithuania on May 24, 2018.

Mr. Sigitas Rimkevičius the Director of the Lithuanian Energy Institute gave a welcome message for the meeting participants.

Mrs. Lina Sabaitienė the Viceminister of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Lithuania gave a presentation on the approach of the Ministry of Energy on the issues that are faced by Lithuania at present especially focusing on the decommissioning issues of Ignalina NPP. She pointed out importance of the international cooperation in the field as well as possibilities for the science to develop unique new technologies. She noted the BRILLIANT project was covering the issue of international cooperation.

Mrs. Sonata Juciutė of the Agency for Science, Innovation and Technology (Lithuania) gave a presentation on the activities of the agency encouraging participation of the companies of Lithuania to participate in the international projects, including H2020 preparation in upcoming FP9 program in new programming period.

Mr. Christian Legrain the Vice-President of the European Nuclear society (ENS) gave a presentation on the issues faced by the nuclear power industry around the world.

After these 3 presentations were followed by presentations given by the team implementing BRILLIANT project, Mr. S. Rimkevičius of LEI (Lithuania) made a general overview of activities, planned and achieved results, Mrs. Y. Hrabar of KTH (Sweden) gave presentation on activities in public communication and wider public involvement, Mrs. K. Deja of NCBJ (Poland) gave presentation on achievements in Nuclear Research Capacity building in Baltic region, Mr. L. Juodis of FTMC (Lithuania) gave presentation on Regional cooperation on nuclear waste and fuel cycle, Mr. E. Norvaiša of LEI (Lithuania) gave presentation on Regional cooperation in analysis of long-term energy supply options and energy security on regional level and Mr. A. Auce of University of Latvia (Latvia) gave presentation on macroeconomic impact of nuclear power program development in the region. The meeting ended with fruitful discussion of all meeting participants.  It was recognised the importance of regional cooperation in energy field, which is especially crucial for small countries of Baltic Sea region. All participants agreed that BRILLIANT project provided a good opportunity for initiation of Baltic Sea countries cooperation in nuclear energy field. Further ways of continuation of this regional cooperation were discussed.
