International Nuclear Summer School in Ukraine: Successful Start

The International Ukrainian-Turkish Nuclear Summer School, organized with the support and participation of the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety (SSTC NRS), Zaporizhzhya NPP, Odessa National Polytechnic University and the Ankara University (Turkey) was held in Odesa (Ukraine) in the period from 13 to 21 July 2018.

“Conducting training for foreign students in the format of a summer school is an interesting experience for our enterprise. We have highly qualified specialists who are ready to share knowledge and skills, - says Ihor Shevchenko, Director of SSTC NRS. - At the same time, Turkey has certain plans for development of nuclear power engineering and Ukrainian experience may be useful”.

The theoretical part of the training lasted for five days. The lectures covered a number of relevant and important topics, including, in particular, future of WWER-1200 reactors, the new generation reactors (PWR-1000, ARC, BN-800), radiation accidents and long-term operation of NPP power units, radiation survey and measurements, regulatory activity, use of up-to-date codes for NRS substantiation, etc.

The lecturers of the International Nuclear Summer School were the best domestic experts in the industry, including SSTC NRS specialists who delivered lectures on “Nuclear Regulatory System of Ukraine. Scientific and Technical Support”, “Use of Thermohydraulic Computer Codes for Substantiation of NPP Safety", “Up-to-Date Neutron-Kinetic Codes for Substantiating NPP Safety”.

As part of the training, the trainees also visited the Zaporizhzhya NPP and the training center, where they had possibility to get acquainted with the practical aspect of both power units operation and nuclear and radiation safety assurance of a nuclear facility.

"Having gained the successful experience of conducting the International Nuclear Summer School, the team of organizers and lecturers is ready to continue working in this area and share knowledge at Ukrainian and as well as at international levels," - summarized Ihor Shevchenko.
